ABOUT
My name is Mariya Dang, and I am currently an undergraduate researcher at the Molecular Mechanism of Disease Laboratory at SDSU. While I was always interested in a research career, it took a while to get to this point. I started my education at Bohomolets National Medical University in Kyiv, Ukraine. There, I gained knowledge in physiology and biochemistry, which helped direct my research interest. This experience also helped me realize that I desire to improve patient outcomes, but not as a physician. When the Russo-Ukrainian war started in February 2022, I, like many others, left in pursuit of safety and was forced to restart my education in the US. While this transition was challenging, my time at Miramar Community College was instrumental in developing hands-on skills and interest in a research career. After transferring from community college to SDSU, I was fortunate to join Dr. Sohl’s lab, which allowed me to explore cancer research through the lens of enzymology. This research allows me to combine my passion for biochemistry, newly developed practical skills, and medical knowledge, helping me develop an interdisciplinary perspective that is crucial in scientific inquiry. My admission to the MARC program provides great support as I navigate my path to becoming a research scientist. By pursuing a PhD in Biochemistry, Immunology, or Pathology, I aim to contribute to research on chronic diseases.
